John Walsh – Oral History Project

BLUE COAT’S WINDOW ON THE PAST, by the people who were there

Interviewers: Christine Holt and Peter Elson

Transcript

John Walsh, born 1941: John entered Blue Coat Secondary Modern as a boarder in 1953, aged 11. He recalls it was a hard, very regimented, but fair regime. Did not mind being in a dormitory. He enjoyed his time at School and went abroad twice with School to Luxembourg and Holland. Sunday involved several clothes changes from usual grey suit into blazers for two hours walk, then Chapel evensong and meeting with parents. John’s mother came every Sunday. He had to get permission from Head to wear long trousers when 14 years old. He is very proud of Blue Coat School.
